Sapphire class visit Housesteads Roman Fort

8th February 2023
This week Year 3/4 visited Housesteads Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall as part of their Roman topic. The children learned about the reasons for building the wall and the fort as well as the buildings inside the fort. We investigated the Commanding Officer's house, the biggest in the fort. We looked at the Head Quarters which is where the offices were. We thought about why there was a large hospital in the fort.  We also ate our lunch in the granaries, thinking about the foods which the soldiers may have enjoyed.  We used our imagination to think about the sounds and smells in the barracks and had fun thinking about how the soldiers used the latrines (toilets) which were a chance to meet and chat!

Back at school the children have been writing about their Roman adventures and sharing their knowledge.
